Inmate Shawn Appleby will get one more year on top of his 40-year sentence for killing a businessman after Superior Court Judge Timothy Bellas suspended two of the three years jail term imposed for his recent escape from prison.

Judge Bellas suspended the sentence after Appleby, 19, pled guilty to the escape charges.

Appleby is currently serving a 40-year sentence for killing businessman Byung Ok Suh in November 1996 after robbing the victim’s store, Chalan Market.

He bolted out of prison on Oct. 10, 1999 at around 7:46 p.m. with inmates Jeronimo S. Ada and Melvin N. Basa. (See related story)

Appleby has a string of criminal records, including theft, resisting arrest, assault with a dangerous weapon, and criminal mischief.
