Two senators are expected to meet today with CNMI scholars attending the University of Guam to try to address the students’ concern on shrinking financial grants provided by the Tenorio administration.

Senate President Paul A. Manglona and Floor Leader Pete P. Reyes as well as Dan Nielsen, the governor’s special assistant for education, and Hilaria K. Santos, scholarship administrator, left yesterday to hold the dialogue on Guam.

There is no information how many UOG students receive CNMI scholarships, but Reyes said several have raised concern over the administration’s decision to cut the grants.

According to the senator, the meeting will help clarify the role of the administration in handling the local scholarship program as well as efforts by the Legislature to increase its funding.

Today’s dialogue is the second such activity undertaken by Reyes following his meeting last September with local students attending colleges in California in efforts to hear their concerns.

He has been vocal in his disappointment over the 50 percent cut in the budget earmarked under the proposed FY 2000 spending package for educational assistance to both off-island and Northern Marianas College students.

Reyes, who also heads the Senate Fiscal Affairs Committee, has vowed to slash funding for non-essential services to infuse more funds into the scholarship and medical referral programs.
