PREL features 3 Saipan students’ artwork
Three students of William S. Reyes Elementary School were surprised when they were shown copies of pamphlets and brochures produced by the Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL). The paintings featured in PREL’s reading materials looked familiar to them.
They should look familiar. They painted them.
The artwork produced by sixth grade students John S. Ermitanio, Dixie Ann Inos, and Jonathan Cabrera were among those chosen by PREL to be printed in its brochures, letter heads, telephone cards, posters, calendars, and official envelops.
“This is part of PREL’s efforts to promote artwork of children in the Pacific. There were more than a hundred entries submitted by children from different islands in the Pacific, and we are excited that our own students’ artwork were selected,” said Jean Olopai, PREL’s program director who is based on Saipan.
The paintings were produced by WSR students during a workshop conducted last February by Lori Philips, a PREL representative from Hawaii.
“The students were asked to draw pictures that show what’s unique in their island,” Olopai said.
Accompanied by their parents, Cabrera, Ermitanio and Inos were given certificates of recognition during a simple ceremony at the PREL office in Puerto Rico last Tuesday.
“I hope PREL will continue using Pacific children’s artwork,’ Olopai said. (MC)
