Government authorities yesterday moved swiftly to contain an oil spill caused by an unknown source at Outer Cove Marina.

Employees of the Commonwealth Ports Authority, the Emergency Management Office and the U.S. coast Guard conducted a joint cleanup to stop the oil spill from spreading.

Local officials only discovered the oil spill at around 7:30 morning, which they suspected to have occurred Monday morning. The agencies mobilized its staff to help in containing the oil spill.

Saipan Harbor General Manager Antonio Cabrera said samples of fuel carried by the various vessels that arrived on the island will be taken to determine whether these match the oil found in the waters.

The agencies that also helped in the cleanup were Mobil and Shell.
