The Pacific Trading Company Pepsi/MGD and the Saipan Stevedore Pirates both won their opener against their respective opponents in the SML Summer League best-of-3 playoff series played last Friday and Saturday at the Francisco Palacios Baseball Field.

Pepsi/MGD continued their dominance over the Northern Yankees with a 10 to 3 beating Friday night, with the game marred by the ejection of the Yankees catcher for unsportsmanlike behavior.

Pepsi/MGD shut out the Yankees in a previous encounter in a one-game tie-breaker to decide the pennant runner-up champ. Pepsi/MGD can wrap up the series with a win tonight.

The Yankees, on the other hand desperately needed a win to force a third and deciding game to stay in contest for the title.

Pat Guerrero, one of Pepsi/MGD’s elite pitching staff, credited with a 32 strikeout to his name, outpitched Chris Camacho of the Yankees as he struck out seven batters in 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing only 3 runs, all unearned, and gave up 4 hits while walking four.

Everette Ngiraidong replaced Guerrero at the top of the sixth with two outs silenced the Yankees, retiring the last four batters for the save. Manny Sablan led Pepsi/MGD’s hitting streak with a 2 for 3 performance and drove in a game high 4 runs. Teammates John Acosta and Mark Toves scored three runs each with Toves going for 2.

Of the Yankees four hits, two of them came off the bat of shortstop sensation Jester Garcia, who went 2 for 2 with a walk. Camacho pitched six inning, gave up all 10 runs, 5 earned on 10 hits, in a losing effort.

Northern Yankees catcher Gus Pangelinan was thrown out of the game in the first inning for attempting to hit the umpire with the ball after being warned for delaying the game.
