Regulations for gaming activities in Rota okayed
Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio signed two new laws on Friday to benefit the people on Rota, including legislation overhauling the municipality’s existing regulations on gaming activities, such as cockfighting, batu and bingo.
The measure, offered by Rep. Alejo M. Mendiola, was passed by the Rota Legislative Delegation to amend a 1990 law that set up cockfighting on the island to include bingo and batu among those subject to government regulations.
“This measure remedies concerns raised in the past regarding similar bills. It also updates and clarifies the existing (law),” said Tenorio in signing Rota Local Law 11-3.
Under the new law, a ten-member commission will be formed to oversee the functions of the regulatory body, which include issuance of license, setting the rates, and revocation to operate gaming on Rota.
The minimum bids for cockfighting license is $5,000; bingo, $1,000; and batu, $1,000. Funds generated by the municipal government will be appropriated by the local delegation for projects and other needs of the island.
Tenorio also signed into Public Law 11-107 an appropriation bill setting aside up to $250,000 for the architectural and engineering design and construction of a new Man’amko center in the Sinapalo village on Rota.
The funds came from unexpended allocation for the renovation and improvement of the existing Man’amko center in nearby Songsong village completed years ago, according to the bill sponsored by Mendiola.
