The Attorney General’s Office yesterday filed escape charges against the three inmates who bolted out of jail last week.

Chief Prosecutor Kevyn Lynch filed individual escape charges at the Superior Court against Shawn Appleby, 19, Jeronimo Ada, 22, and Melvyn Basa, 27. They will be arraigned on Monday.

The three were recaptured Tuesday at a house in Kagman III after a 46-hour manhunt.

Appleby is serving a 40-year sentence for killing Korean businessman Byung Ok Suh in November 1996. Aside from the murder conviction, Appleby also had a string of criminal records including theft, resisting arrest, assault with dangerous weapon and criminal mischief.

Ada and Basa are awaiting trial for 37 counts of criminal charges including kidnapping, assault and battery, robbery, and illegal carrying of firearm, among others, in connection with a riot in Koblerville last July 11.

The three underwent a two-hour interrogation Wednesday to determine how they managed to sneak away from the custody of the jail guards, and find out who might have helped them escape.
