The Board of Regents of the Northern Marianas College has started reviewing the applications submitted by more than 20 individuals who aspire to replace outgoing college president Agnes McPhetres, according to NMC’s information officer Ray Mafnas.

Mafnas said two more applicants beat Friday’s deadline for filing of applications and credentials.

Most of the applicants are from off-island, Mafnas said. He refused to identify them.

McPhetres, who has been the college head since 1981, is retiring in December. She announced her retirement earlier this year at the height of controversy involving NMC’s scholarship program.

“I’m not sure if the selection of president will take place before or after the retirement of Ms. McPhetres,” Mafnas said. “It is up to the Board of Regents to make the selection and conduct the interviews.”

Mafnas could not say how long it would take the board to complete the process and name its choice.

He said NMC vice president Jack Sablan would be acting president if the board failed to make the selection after McPretres’ retirement.

The minimum qualifications for the position include a master’s degree and at least five years of experience in the field of education and administration. (MCM)
