The Board of Elections yesterday urged all political parties to submit their nominating petitions for candidates on or before Sept. 22, the deadline for filing of candidacy.

BOE Executive Director Greg Sablan said the board is scheduled to meet on Sept. 29 and 30 to review and certify the nominating petitions.

Sablan said two independent candidates, both racing for the Precinct 4 seats at the House of Representatives, have filed their petitions with the board. BOE has certified Benigno M. Sablan’s petition. The other candidate, Justo Quitugua, filed his petition yesterday.

Three political parties, aside from the independent bloc, will jostle for the positions at stake in the Nov. 6 mid-term elections.

Reform Party, headed by former Gov. Froilan C. Tenorio, provides additional color to the political landscape traditionally dominated by Republicans and Democrats.

Also yesterday, the elections board started distributing application forms for absentee voting requests.

“These applications are only for registered voters who are not here and those who are planning to leave the island before the election day,” Sablan said.

Sablan said the board shipped out yesterday 306 application forms for off-island registered voters, including students who are enrolled in schools and universities outside the CNMI.

The list of off-island students was provided to the board by the Scholarship Office.

“The filled-up application forms will be mailed back and hopefully we can start sending out ballots by mid-October,” Sablan said. (MCM)
