Liewela: A Micronesian Story, the only cultural documentary film produced on Saipan, will be screened at a premiere international film festival in Japan.

Lieweila is one of the 100 films selected for the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival (YIDFF) to be held in October, according to Fujiko Asano, project coordinator.

“We intend to show your work with Japanese simultaneous translation for the audience,” Asano told Beret Strong, one of the producers of Lieweila.

The filmfest will be held at Yamagata City, north of Japan.

This year’s YIDFF has six programs and Lieweila will be part of the World Special Program, a non competition segment, which has 21 entries to be screened. Lieweila will be shown on Oct. 22.

Lieweila is a film about the Refalawash of the Northern Marianas. It tells about the indigenous people’s history, heritage, culture, and aspirations.

The film is co-produced by Cinta Kaipat.(MCM)
