DD Council awards JTPA summer trainee with a developmental disability
The CNMI Governor’s Developmental Disabilities Council (or DD Council) sponsored a JTPA summer trainee for six weeks beginning June 21 through August 6, 1999. The trainee, Ms. Johanna Ada, 18, currently a senior at Marianas High School, provided clerical assistance to the staff.
During her last day at the DD Council, the Executive Director, Mr. Thomas J. Camacho, presented Johanna with a certificate of award for maintaining a perfect time and attendance record throughout the training period.
Johanna was, in every sense, a truly dedicated trainee employee, despite her developmental disability. According to Mr. Thomas J. Camacho, “we want to inform the general community, employers especially, that employees with (developmental) disabilities are just as productive, if not more, than employees Without disabilities.
Also, they take their jobs very seriously. Johanna’s perfect time and attendance record speaks for itself.”
Furthermore, Mr. Camacho points out that the ADA’S (Americans with Disabilities Act) mandates on reasonable accommodation (for employees With disabilities) do work and can be affordable for employers, as studies and data suggest.
