The Marianas High School, the only public high school on Saipan, has received a six-year term accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Accrediting Commission for Schools.

Six years is equivalent to a full-term award, the longest that a school can get from WASC.

Another public school which recently received a full-term accreditation from the commission was Garapan Elementary School.

“This is the first time MHS has received such an award,” according to principal Jim Denight.

“It is evident that MHS students, faculty and staff are among the best in the region. MHS will continue to offer every opportunity to improve the quality of education for its students,” Denight added.

The committee, which visited several CNMI schools last year, recognized MHS for the commitment and dedication of the staff and faculty to providing quality education.

The committee report described as “dramatic” the recent improvements in the overall school environment both inside the classrooms and around the campus.

“There is consistent and positive evidence throughout the school of the considerable dedication, creativity and hard work of the faculty, staff, the new principal and the students,” according to the committee report which was the basis of the commission’s decision.

The report also commended the “positive spirit” showed by teachers who work “under less than optimal conditions.”

“The considerable pride and school spirit exhibited by the students is equally contagious and positive,” the report stated.

In the area of Support for Students’ Personal and Academic Growth, the committee said the school staff showed “incredible dedication and willingness” to help all students realize their potential.

This aspect, according to the committee “is unquestionably a most positive and admirable attribute of the school.” (MCM)
