Twenty participants including employers and advocates have received certificates of participation after completing a three-day training workshop sponsored by the CNMI Governor’s Developmental Disabilities Council, or DD Council.

“The workshop, entitled Employment Power Training, was aimed at providing CNMI employers with firsthand knowledge about the best way to accommodate employees with disabilities,” said Arlene Yamagata, the council’s program officer.

“Basically, our attempt was to focus on two very important issues: reasonable accommodations and attitudinal barriers. Federal laws such as Title I, which covers employment, of the Americans with Disabilities Act was also discussed.”

Berni Grajek, program coordinator for Guam DD Council, conducted the workshop from Aug. 11 to 13 at the Saipan Grand Hotel.

Close to 70 percent of the 19 participants who filled out evaluation forms thought the workshop, overall, was excellent,” Yamagata said.

The DD Council is looking at conducting the workshop on a regular basis to bring more awareness to employers who are currently employing and who are considering hiring individuals with disabilities.

Thomas J. Camacho, executive director of the council, thanked Grajek and the Guam DD Council for their support in providing the training at no cost to the CNMI.

“I would like to thank the participants for including in their hiring practices qualified individuals with disabilities,” said Camacho. `’Not only was the workshop all about best practices, but it was designed to eliminate fears and myths about employing people with disabilities.”
