Woman sentenced to
one year for assault

A woman who had pled guilty to charges of assault with dangerous weapon was sentenced Monday to one year imprisonment.

Maiya Katuwal was given a suspended prison sentence except for 14 days.

Superior Court Associate Judge Timothy Bellas ordered Katuwal, a native of Nepal, to report to the Division of Corrections on Aug. 20.

She will be released on Aug. 31 as she has already served three days in jail following her arrest early this year.

Asst. Atty. General Kevin Lynch charged Katuwal for attacking her friend Sandeep Kumar Rai, also a Nepalese, with a knife on Jan. 31.

EMO recovers 80 percent
of oil spill on Tinian

The Emergency Management Office has already recovered at least 80 percent of the oil spill which was caused by a vessel that sank last week in Tinian Harbor, according to acting EMO Director Greg A. Deleon Guerrero.

He said the leaking fuel tank has been plugged and majority of the debris that came from the vessel have also been picked up.

JQC II, berthed at Tinian finger pier, contained some 118 gallons of oil. Oil booms and absorbent pads were used to contain the oil spill.

EMO is still making an evaluation of the cost of floating the vessel and sinking it again in the open ocean either before the end of the month or second week of September. A company in Guam will assist EMO in carrying out the job.

The Commonwealth Development Authority, which holds the lien on the ship originally owned by Joaquin Q. Castro, has been assisting EMO in fixing the problem to prevent any environmental disaster.

So far, all threats to navigation on Tinian Harbor have been removed and work is being done to protect the environment.

This developed as the U.S. Marshal sunk the four Chinese vessels over the weekend in the open ocean after these have been thoroughly cleaned. The vessels, which carried Chinese illegal immigrants, were intercepted by the U.S. Coast Guard off Guam and diverted to the island-municipality of Tinian.

Passengers of these vessels have been sent back to China. (LFR)
