DOLI sues employer

The Department of Labor and Immigration has sued an employer for his alleged failure to pay a nonresident worker’s back wages and other claims established in the department’s administrative order last year.

DOLI filed the civil action in the Superior Court against Yang Young Kook and the bonding firm, Premier Insurance Company, for alleged violation of the Nonresident Workers Act and failure to enforce the department’s administrative order issued on Sept. 8, 1998.

The case was filed on behalf of Gao Ren Xiang who is allegedly owed a total of $6,7200 in unpaid wages, unpaid bond proceeds, and liquidated damages among others. (MCM)

Cigarette machine at the court

The presence of a cigarette machine inside the courtroom may promise to add another flavor to the complicated Mogambo case, which is set to be heard at the Superior Court next week.

Lawyer Ted Mitchell has filed a motion in the court asking the Elm’s Inc. representative to bring the cigarette machine to the courtroom on Aug. 9.

The case arose from a fighting incident at Mogambo Cafe in August 1993, during which Mitchell pushed lawyer James Grizzard onto the cigarette machine.

Grizzard had sued Mogambo but spared Mitchell. Mogambo had sued Mitchell, who in turn filed a counterclaim against Elm’s saying it was to be blamed for placing the machine in the hazardous location at the bar. (MCM)
