Asia Pacific lawmakers hold conference next week
Close to 100 legislators from 23 countries in the Asia Pacific will gather next week on Saipan to discuss various regional issues during a conference of the Asian-Pacific Parliamentarians Union (APPU).
This will be the second time the organization is conducting its annual council meeting in the CNMI since 1982. It will be held from June 7 to 9 at the Hyatt Regency Saipan.
According to Senate Vice President Thomas P. Villagomez, chair of the organizing committee, the meeting will tackle the APPU charter and possible amendments to some provisions which will strengthen the group.
So far more than 55 lawmakers have confirmed attendance to the conference, including delegates from Kiribati, Taiwan R.O.C., Nauru, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Palau, Tuvalu, Malaysia, Marshalls and FSM.
Others expected to attend include those from the Philippines, Guam, Fiji, Cook Islands, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Laos, Vanuatu and Vietnam.
Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio is scheduled to deliver his opening remarks on Monday.
Established in 1965, the former Asian Parliamentarians Union accepted members from Pacific island nations in 1975, reflecting close relations between these two regions and strengthening solidarity and the force of freedom among their peoples.
