NMC says economic study should be submitted to US
Northern Marianas College President Agnes McPhetres yesterday asked Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio to provide key US officials with an economic study prepared by the locals when he visits Washington D.C. this years.
According to McPhetres, the study once again underpins the valuable role played by the garment industry in sustaining the island economy.
“I hope it will be completed before you go to Washington so you can show that to U.S. officials and emphasize that the study gathered the inputs from the community,” she said.
NMC officials, members of the Legislature and Commonwealth Development Authority Chairman Juan S. Tenorio gathered yesterday at the Governor’s Office for the signing of a proclamation declaring June as the Small Business Development Month.
The Business Development Center of NMC took the lead in organizing the CNMI Economic Summit last March. Both CDA and the Office of the Insular Affairs provided the college with the needed funding to hold the first CNMI economic conference.
Moreover, the OIA pumped in $200,000 to help finance a study, which has gathered the inputs and recommendations made during the economic summit. The study will offer a baseline information to investors that will cover demographic forecasts and economic alternatives to consider.
McPhetres said the 300-page study will be ready this month and will offer a fair perspective about the economic potentials of the CNMI.
“It is a very good document which we can even send to the U.S. Congress. There’s no bias about it,” she told CNMI officials.
The president also informed officials that NMC is preparing for another funding request for OIA in order to implement the recommendations made by experts during the summit.
According to Tenorio, his administration will work hard to put the study in good use, as he underscored the need of the community for support services from BDC, particularly for people who would want to venture into business.
