1999 Environmental Awareness Week a big success
The Division of Environmental Quality has announced the winners of the recently concluded aluminum recycling contest which was part of the Environmental Awareness Week celebration.
Schools which participated in the contest collected over 5,779 pounds of aluminum cans. Winners are:
Saipan Community School Kindergarten 3rd grade division, teacher Ivy Thompkins with over 497 pounds of cans collected.
In the 4th-6th grade category, Gregorio T. Camacho and Ligo Faasa neared first place with 394 pounds collected. In the 7th-8th grade division, Maggie Concepcion’s 7th grade Hopwood Jr. High class came in first place by collecting 308 pounds of cans. And in the 9th-12th grade category, Marianas High School and teacher Karen Borja collected just over 100 pounds of cans enough for first place honors.
In other Environmental Awareness Week activities, 14 beaches were “adopted” by Saipan schools and non-profit organizations as part of the “Adopt a Beach” program. The schools and agencies will visit their adopted beaches once a month for one year and give it a cleaning. Everybody in the CNMI has to do their part and clean up after using the beach. DEQ noted that children who adopted LauLau Bay had to stop cleaning because of the tremendous amount of trash they found. It was just too much to clean in one day. Rota also had three beaches adopted by schools as part of the Environmental Awareness Week program.
The Department of Public Works, Saipan Mayor’s Office and Cruz Sanitation Service provided dump trucks and helped haul tons of trash collected by hundreds of island residents.
