Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio yesterday ordered immigration and public safety officials to step up monitoring of entry points on Rota to curb the influx of foreign nationals who are using the island-municipality as a jump-off point to Guam.

The governor renewed calls for a clamp down on suspected illegals in view of the arrests of Chinese nationals off the waters of Guam last week.

Due to its proximity to the neighboring island, Rota has been a favorite destination of illegals seeking entry to Guam, a US territory in the southernmost island of the Marianas.

Hordes of illegals enter Guam using small boats, and their growing numbers over the years have worried federal officials.

“The immigration and public safety are monitoring it to make sure that these people would not used Rota as a way of traveling to Guam,” Tenorio said in an interview.

He admitted that in the past there were a big number of illegals, mostly Chinese nationals, who managed to enter Guam through Rota.
