NMC retains 1 VP, 4 deans in shuffle
Under the new reorganization plan now being considered by the Board of Regents, the Northern Marianas College will have a single vice president and four deans.
The plan was presented to the faculty members during the meeting called by President Agnes McPhetres last Tuesday afternoon.
At present, NMC has three vice-presidents and one provost. There are also 17 deans leading the various programs at the college.
In an interview, Board chairman Manuel Sablan is serious on introducing other reforms at NMC and in pursuing another reorganization plan the soonest time.
“There is a need to reorganize and we will address this from the stand point of productivity. We will also need to restructure programs, making them employment driven,” he said.
Calling this period as the “trying times” for the college, this down sizing plan will cut on personnel cost.
According to sources, taking out three individuals from the vice president post and 13 deans will right away translate to huge savings.
The Board will retain one vice president and will select from Tee Abraham (VP for Administration), Barbara Moir (VP for Instruction), Jack Sablan (VP for Support Services) and Provost Roy Fua.
A special board meeting is set for Monday and members are expected to decide on this new reorganizational plan.
Last January, the Board also approved the earlier reorganization plan for NMC. Also aimed at streamlining its daily operations, 19 FTEs were to be phased-out which would mean $700,000 savings on personnel.
However, following the series of hearings conducted by the Health, Education and Welfare Committee over its financial affairs, the Board will again restructure its current organization.
“I picked up a lot of things from the oversight hearing and whatever recommendations the committee will present to us, we will do it,” Sablan said.
