A proposal to identify ten major zones will serve as the basis of school attendance for the nine public schools on Saipan starting August this year.

Prepared by the CIP committee for discussion during the Board of Education meeting yesterday, the zoning proposal included the ninth school on Saipan scheduled to open this month at DanDan. Although, it is not certain yet if the Kagman school will open this August, PSS has identified areas that will be assigned to its zone.

Children from Donnie Hill, Agag, Tapochau, Laulau, Papago and As Teo are expected to enroll at Kagman school.

The proposal has assigned those from As Mahelog and Lower Base will attend Tanapag school. While the Garapan School will still cover the widest area including China Town, Sugar King, Gualo Rai, Chalan Galaide, Maturanna Hill, Navy Hill, Puerto Rico, Sadog Tasi and Capitol Hill.

Children from Chalan Laulau, Quarter Master and Chalan Kiya will go to Oleai School. Those from Chalan Piao and As Perdido will attend San Antonio school. While Koblerville School will also admit children coming from the Fina Sisu area.

The William S. Reyes, one of the most populated schools, will now complete its enrollment from Chalan Kanoa, Susupe and As Lito. San Vicente School will enlist students from Kanat Tabla and northern part of As Terlaje.

Students attending Hopwood Junior High School and the Marianas High School will not be covered with this zoning policy.

The implementation of a zoning policy is expected to ease school bus routing problems on Saipan and will again promote the “village” school in rallying support from parents.

A CIP Committee meeting is scheduled this month to gather comments from the community about the school-zone assignment. The proposal is expected to draw various reactions from each precinct on Saipan.
