Inmate starts fire in escape try
One of the 8 escaped convicts was again itching to go free but his causing a fire Wednesday afternoon will only prolong his stay inside the Division of Correction.
William Sablan, convicted of several counts of assault, battery and robbery, started a fire inside the central male detention by burning his futon. He will be charged with arson.
According to reports prepared by the Department of Public Safety, an emergency call was made past 5 p.m. last Wednesday reporting a structure fire in the central male detention.
The entire facility was filled with smoke and prisoners were temporarily transfered while the place was secured, said DPS spokesperson Rose Ada.
Prior to the incident, Sablan requested to use the comfort room and was granted. However, he refused to go back to his cell and had to be taken in by the prison officers. This reportedly drove him mad and threw his lunch box to one of the officers. He later started to burn his futon, Ada said.
Sources said since he was captured last Friday along with Vicente Aldan Jr. and Jeffrey Celis at the Tutuman area in San Vicente, Sablan has been having fits. The former president of the in-mates is now causing sleepless nights to his fellow-prisoners.
Together with the seven escaped convicts, he will face the court on Monday with additional charges.
Meanwhile, another robbery was reported Wednesday at San Antonio. The victim, Jing-Lan Ding, a garment worker of UIC, was walking along the area when a man suddenly grabbed her purse. The male suspect, who was sporting a crew cut and is skinny, fled from the site using a dark-colored pick-up truck.
