Despite its on-going austerity measures and fear of pay reduction, 98 percent of the people working in the Public School System will stay until the next school year.

From 503 respondents, only nine expressed plans to end their employment with PSS. In addition, from the 328 teachers who answered the survey, 179 actually have plans to work with PSS until the next 10 to 20 years. While some 100 teachers would like to stay for the next four years.

“We can project, based upon survey results that only 12 teachers will elect not to renew their contracts at the end of this school year,” Inos said in her memo to the Board of Education.

Only 8 employees are expected to retire for the next two years from PSS.

The PSS also distributed to principals a salary option survey to test the professional service contract which officials intend to introduce this year.

From over 500 respondents, close to 100 or 16 percent preferred the professional service contract. However, PSS is projecting to rally some 150 teachers and non-teaching staff to sign up for this type of contract.

The potential savings this group would bring in is projected at $1 million each year. The average annual salary of PSS employees is $36,000 with a total fringe benefit package of $10,000 on top of it. The PSS would realize 66 percent savings from the benefit package which would amount to $ 1 million for some 150 employees.

The same survey showed that majority preferred to receive their pay check twice a month.

The PSS started this survey last month to support plans for the next school year with correct figures.
