DPS tracking down hit-and-run suspect
The Department of Public Safety is tracking down two people who might have owned the car that struck and killed a 56-year-old male jogger in a hit-and-run Sunday.
Their names came out of the Law Enforcement Management Information System of DPS.
“A name came out but there are two people on island with that name so we’re tracking them down,” said Rose T. Ada, DPS public information officer.
The incident was reported to DPS at 6:17 a.m. by an unidentified caller who said that a Hyundai Elantra bearing license plate ACH 402 was traveling north when it hit Francisco Manalo Cabrera.
Cabrera, an employee of the Department of Public Works, was jogging at the time he was hit by the vehicle that immediately fled from the scene.
Medics attended to Cabrera, who was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead at 6:26 a.m.
According to the report, Cabrera suffered massive skull fracture, bruises and contusion on his stomach area and scrapes in both his arms and knees.
Ada said the vehicle possibly sustained severe damage due to the strong impact.
An all-point-bulletin has been disseminated to all units out in the street to locate the operator of the vehicle.
DPS is also asking the caller to call again in order to provide more information about the incident. Calls, Ada assured, will be kept confidential.
Meanwhile, a 36-year-old Filipino male died from a boat accident last Friday afternoon near Managaha Island.
The identity of the victim, an employee of HBR International Inc., is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.
According to the preliminary report, the victim was swimming in the area close to the pier in Managaha when he was hit by the speedboat being operated by Capt. Emilio A. Santos.
Santos immediately picked him up and brought him to the Smiling Cove where a medics team transported him to CHC.
He was pronounced dead at 4:30 p.m.
It was not reported what kind of injuries he sustained and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of his death.
Santos was escorted by the US Coast Guard to the Pacific Medical Center to undergo alcohol and drug tests. The results will be out within the next two weeks.
Ada said Santos was at the area picking up passengers.
