Candlelight vigil kicks off 3-D month
A candlelight vigil parade was held Monday night, signaling the start of Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month.
Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio, who proclaimed the month of December as 3-D Month, headed the parade along with DPS Commissioner Charles Ingram.
The Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month is an annual event celebrated in the CNMI as well as in other states to emphasize saving lives by eliminating impaired driving.
This year’s theme, “Putting Together the Pieces of Safe Communities to Take A Stand Against Impaired Driving,” was carried on from last year.
For years, DPS has taken steps to inform the public of the effects of impaired driving. The nation had lost countless lives because of people who chose to drive while under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Impaired driving continues to be the most frequently-committed road violation, according to DPS.
To reduce road accidents, the Marianas Visitors Authority, DPS and the ABC Board of the Department of Commerce have formed a committee to address the dangers of impaired driving in the CNMI.
During the month-long celebration, several events will take place in the CNMI including the National Lights on for Life Day, the Children’s Christmas Candlelight parade and the National Holiday Lifesaver Weekend.
The National Lights on for Life Day is scheduled for Dec. 18, at which motorists and motorcyclists are encouraged to drive with their headlights on to remember those who died or got injured in an impaired-driving incident.
The National Holiday Lifesaver Weekend is designated for increased enforcement of impaired driving laws during the December holiday season.
DPS will also hold displays of law-enforcement equipment to showcase the latest technology used by CNMI law enforcers.
The Children’s Christmas Candlelight parade will be celebrated this year with food and entertainment.
