Woman admits forging checks
A woman from DanDan who stole and forged almost $4,000 in refund checks has pleaded guilty to the offense and was given a suspended sentence.
Associate Judge Juan T. Lizama suspended the imposition of sentence for Gloria A. Duenas after a plea agreement with the government.
The sentence was suspended for 20 months on the condition that she pays $750 in fine, performs 120 hours of community work service and pays restitution to the victims.
The Attorney General’s Office charged Duenas with three counts of theft and three counts of forgery on Aug. 1, 1997.
The charges carry a jail sentence of five years and a fine of $5,000 for each count.
Court documents showed that on three different occasions, Duenas took and cashed refund checks and converted them to her own use.
The first incident was on Jan. 22, 1997 when Duenas took and cashed $1,580.54 refund check made out to Akira Yoshima. She signed the check with the name of the payee although she did not have any authority to do so.
The other incidents happened on April 15 and June 4 of 1996 when she took and cashed two refund checks belonging to Keiji Mori. The checks were worth $1,106 and $1,312.03.
