Four inmates who ran away from the custody of the Division of Corrections last April and May have been summoned to appear in court to face new charges of escape.

Assistant Attorney General Robert Steinborn filed separate charges against Sheldon R. Yano aka Sheldon Cruz, Jeffrey Sablan Basa, Ryan Taitano Babauta and Peter D. Cabrera.

Yano, 22, and Cabrera, 22, escaped on two separate occasions, while Basa, 20, and Babauta, 20, escaped once.

The four first escaped from DOC last April 26 along with another inmate, Gerald Cabrera Sablan. The Attorney General’s Office did not file any escape charge against Sablan.

Babauta, Basa and Yano escaped shortly after they were taken out of the detention facility. It was discovered that they cut the wire fence to break loose.

The second escape happened last May 31 and only Yano and Cabrera were involved.

They managed to escape from the facility due to alleged negligence of officers who are on duty when the incident happened.

All four are summoned to appear in court on Dec. 14 at 9 a.m.

The incident also forced DOC to undergo minor changes to ensure safety and security.

Two weeks ago, a gate was erected around the area that surrounds DOC. All visitors are now required to call and make an appointment before they can visit their family members. Appointments must be made a week prior to the desired date.

On visiting days, visitors are to park their cars across the street, at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles parking lot.

According to Rose Ada, public information officer, DOC’s parking lot are now reserved for DPS officials, emergency vehicles and caterers.

DPS warned that visitor’s vehicles found parked outside the fence will be towed at the owner’s expense.
