9 to participate in bartender’s cocktail competition

Nine participants will challenge each other in a cocktail concoction competition this Saturday, May 24, at the Taste of the Marianas Food Festival and Beer Garden at the American Memorial Park.
The theme for this year’s cocktail competition is “Bacardi Superior Mojito Cocktail Challenge.”
Northern Marianas Bartender Association chair Lito Espino said that judging would be based on originality, neatness, impact on audience, showmanship, taste, and overall performance.
“Aside from the competition, participants will have to concoct one cocktail mixed with Aloha drinks and the judges will do the selection,” Espino said.
He said the participants will wear a T-shirt with the print “Bacardi Superior” and are allowed to use free pouring technique on alcohol ingredients.
Participants are not allowed to use ingredients such as ice cream, chocolate syrup, decorations, and non-edible garnish.
There will be a time limit of five minutes, during which contestants must prepare one for display and four for tasting.
Prizes will include trophies and medals. One contestant will be declared the champion, followed by first, second, and third placers.
The champion will get a cell phone from IT&E, a gift from Duty Free Shoppers Saipan, a Marpac gift, Coca-Cola products, and a $150 cash prize.
All first to third placers will also receive gifts from DFS, IT&E, and Marpac but the first place winner will get $75 cash, second will receive $50, while third place will receive in-kind gifts.
Prizes will also be given to the best in taste, best in showmanship, and best in props and costumes.
Four judges will select the best drink and do the scoring for the competition, while two members of the United Filipino Organizations will be tabulators.
Sponsors for the event include the Marianas Visitors Authority, Marpac, Bacardi Superior, DFS Saipan, IT&E, Coca-Cola, The Coffee Room N-106, Armatech, and UFO.
