8 boats take part in Rota derby

A total of eight boats took part in Friendly Fishing Club’s 5th Annual Luta Friendly Fishing Derby held last Friday in the waters off the CNMI’s southernmost chain.

The derby, which was held in honor of the late Vicente Mendiola Calvo, had three categories—wahoo, mahi-mahi, and yellowfin tuna.

The wahoo category was won by MV OJ Boy after the Irvin Taimanao-skippered boat caught a 17.5-lb fish. Second place went to MV Ben Senior with Vicente Atalig at the helm after reeling in a fish weighing 16.5 lbs.

MV Niah of captain Dave Santos topped the mahi-mahi category after landing a 15-pounder. Santos is a resident of Rota but is also out of Guam.

Runner-up was MV Puedi Suete of skipper Ignacio Lizama Jr. after they caught a 14.5-lb mahi-mahi, while third place was  captain Jim Atalig and co-captain Jim M. Atalig Jr., and Tyron Pinaula aboard their MV Chamorrita. They hooked mahi-mahi that weighed 14 lbs.

In the yellowfin tuna category, first place was MV Puedi Suete with its catch of 17 lbs, followed by second place MV Julianna and captain David Quevas and their 8-lb fish.

The 5th Annual Luta Friendly Fishing Derby was held in honor of Calvo, president and owner of derby main sponsor Calvo Enterprises. He also was a former Senate president of the CNMI Senate and councilman of Rota.

Aside from Calvo Enterprises, the event was also made possible by the sponsorship of Sinapalo Safeway, Francisco and Ofelia Atalig, S&Y Corp., A-Heart Retail’s Juan Pan Guerrero, the Rota leadership, the Rota Mayor’s Office, 19th RMC, Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services, DPS-Boating Safety, Department of Lands and Natural Resources, and Division of Fish and Wildlife.

Friendly Fishing Club also congratulated the winners and thanked all the participants of this year’s event. The organization also extended their gratitude to derby officials, namely club president Jim Atalig, vice president Tillie Taimanao, treasurer Tina Atalig, and secretary Pualani Taisacan.
