8 arrested for allegedly carjacking tour vans
A group of juveniles were arrested earlier this week for allegedly stealing two tour vans and are currently detained at the Department of Corrections.
According to the Department of Public Safety, the group of eight juveniles were spotted last Monday driving a stolen tour van.
Five of the eight were arrested and detained but the three were not. The DPS statement did not specify why the three were not arrested.
At approximately 2:05am, DPS officers stopped a tour van for a traffic violation near Johnny’s Bar and Grill in Garapan. Three individuals were spotted inside the van, including the driver.
The driver could not give the police officers any form of identification and was asked to step out of the vehicle. Immediately after getting out of the vehicle, the driver and his two other passengers fled the scene on foot.
The officers gave chase but soon lost sight of them. The van was impounded.
Later that same day, at 12:25pm, a male caller contacted DPS to report a stolen tour van from the Marianas Business Plaza that was later identified as the tour van that DPS had impounded earlier that day.
According to the caller, the van was stolen at approximately 6pm on Sunday evening, Aug. 12.
At 11:22pm, another tour van was reported stolen from the Moonlight Poker parking area in Chalan Kanoa.
An eyewitness told Saipan Tribune that the van was later spotted in Garapan where the eight juveniles (including the individuals spotted earlier that day) were arrested by DPS and detained.
