The 71-year-old Korean man who drowned at the beach of Kensington Hotel in San Roque on Thursday was wearing a life vest while swimming in knee-deep water, police said.

Acting Department of Public Safety spokesman Sgt. Jason Tarkong said over the weekend that DPS received a call about the possible drowning incident at the beach of Kensington Hotel at 3:53pm.

Tarkong said investigation showed that the victim, identified as Kyoung Ju Kim, was with his family when he went swimming in the water that was only knee-deep and was wearing a life vest.

About a minute into the swim, Kim’s 65-year-old wife noticed him face down in the water and not moving.

The 36-year-old son retrieved Kim from the ocean.

The victim was not breathing, prompting the hotel’s lifeguards to apply cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him until Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived and took over.

The victim was brought to the Commonwealth Health Center’s emergency room, where a doctor pronounced him dead at 4:41pm.

In the Laolao Bay drowning on Thursday, Tarkong clarified over the weekend that the victim was 50 years old and not 60 as he had previously released.

Tarkong said the correct age of Norihiko Manabe was confirmed on Friday after obtaining confirmation from his identification document.

Tarkong said investigation showed that Manabe was last seen Thursday morning about 15 meters from the dive buoy channel marker.

The dive instructor was assisting the two other divers through the dive chute and looked back for Manabe, who was missing. The instructor informed the security guard at the beach of the missing diver.

The diver then called 911. Police responded at 12:29pm after receiving the call.

At 3:14pm, DFEMS Search and Rescue Unit personnel discovered the victim’s body on the beach about 500 meters south of the dive spot.

Manabe was taken to CHC emergency room, where a doctor pronounced him dead at 6:48pm, according to Tarkong.
