More than 60 complete financial crime workshop

Law enforcement and regulatory agencies came together last week for a financial crime workshop that equips the CNMI with techniques and advice on how to tackle and prevent financial crimes.

The workshop, held from Nov. 13 to Nov. 17, drew 32 from the Commonwealth Casino Commission, 17 from CNMI Customs, eight from Revenue and Taxation Enforcement, and three each from Revenue and Taxation and Department of Public Safety.

According to of CNMI Customs director Jose C. Mafnas, the Financial Crime Investigative Workshop was a way to equip the CNMI for financial crimes.

“[This training] would prepare us or enhance whatever tools that we have now, especially in money laundering and any other financial criminal activities we should encounter at the airport or the casino itself,” he said.

CCC executive director Edward Deleon Guerrero said that he as well as commissioners Justin Manglona, Martin San Nicolas, Alvaro Santos, and chair Juan Sablan were included in the workshop.

Workshop instructors included officers from the Oceania Customs Organization.
