6 tabulating machines delivered, tested

Six newly purchased tabulating machines for the Nov. 3 general election have been delivered to the Commonwealth Election Commission in Susupe and have been tested, according to CEC executive director Julita A. Villagomez.

Villagomez on Monday also reminded voters that this Friday, Oct. 9, is the deadline to request for absentee voting by electronic/mail.

CEC started accepting requests for absentee ballots last Aug. 20.

Villagomez disclosed that two big tabulating machines and four smaller ones that were bought from the Nebraska-based Election Systems and Software have already been shipped to Saipan and that the ESS technician, who arrived last Thursday, had already put the machines together and tested them. She said the technician left the CNMI last Saturday.

“Everything is okay,” she said.

Rota and Tinian will each get two small tabulating machines, while Saipan will use the two big ones.

CEC decided to buy the six tabulating machines—all worth $170,000—to replace the five old machines that were “slow and obsolete.”

CEC purchased the five old machines from the same Nebraska company in 2003.
