PDM Promoters conducted its final cleanup of the year last Dec. 9 at the Paseo De Marianas and its running total for garbage collected in 2019 is now 5,400 lbs.
The non-profit’s 37 volunteers hauled a total of 240 lbs of rubbish last CNMI Constitution Day. The group normally conducts its monthly cleanups on Saturdays, but since Monday was a holiday and Saturdays are quite busy due to the Christmas in the Marianas event, they decided to do the cleanup that day, according to PDM Promoters coordinator Sonia Siwa.
The volunteers, made up of 31 members of the Saipan Awaodori Team and six Kinpachi restaurant staff, started their cleanup at 9am and it encompassed the areas of Paseo de Marianas, Coral Tree Avenue, AMP Road, Beach Road, and their connecting alleyways.
Siwa said she’s appreciative of the youth from the Saipan Awaodori Team who never fail to volunteer during their monthly cleanup drives.
“We can say these young volunteers learn something from their experience. We let them know that these cleanups are necessary to keep our place clean and attractive, not only for the residents but also for our visitors,” she said.
December’s 240-lb garbage haul was tied with April as the lowest of the year. For the record, the biggest came in May (690 lbs), followed by March and August (660 lbs), October (580 lbs), February (500 lbs), January (460 lbs), September (440 lbs), June (360 lbs), July (300 lbs), and November (280 lbs).
PDM Promoters’ monthly cleanups are usually held every Saturday and are supported by the Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality and the non-profit’s major sponsors, T Galleria and TSL Foundation.
Siwa said T Galleria and TSL Foundation’s support enables them to have the cleaning materials needed. Kinpachi Restaurant provides the meal and snacks for the volunteers.
Volunteers of PDM Promoters will be at it again in January when it conducts its first monthly cleanup of 2020.
