The Micronesia Repatriation Association will be hosting their 50th Okinawa Peace Memorial today at 1pm, at the Okinawa Peace Tower in Marpi.
MRA has been venturing to the CNMI for 50 years now, through Pacific Development Inc., to ensure that the people of Okinawa and the people of the Marianas maintain the relationship that’s been established over the years.
On Thursday, Aug. 29, a total of 17 members of the MRA will be at the Saipan Mayor’s Office to meet with Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang. In the evening, the Mayor’s Office and the Governor’s Office will host a dinner party for the Okinawans at the Carolinian Utt in Garapan.

This year’s pilgrimage brings to the CNMI about 140 members of the MRA. While this is the last for their elderly members, MRA is hopeful that their younger members would carry on the tradition.

A resolution will be presented to MRA to thank them for their longstanding presence on the island and for their role in continuing the relationship between Okinawa and Saipan.

The peace memorial service is held annually for the past 50 years to pray for those who perished during World War II.
