$50K bail set for man who allegedly threatened woman with knife
The Superior Court has imposed a $50,000 cash bail on a man accused of sexually assaulting a woman and threatening her at knifepoint.
Superior Court Associate Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio imposed last Monday a $50,000 cash bail on Thomas T. Matsunaga, 57, who is facing charges of sexual assault in the first degree, assault and battery, assault with a dangerous weapon, disturbing the peace, and domestic violence.
Matsunaga was remanded back to Department of Corrections custody after his bail hearing and was ordered to return to court for a preliminary hearing on May 17 at 10am. Meanwhile, the judge set Matsunaga’s arraignment for May 22 at 9am.
During the hearing, Matsunaga was represented by Chief Public Defender Douglas Hartig while assistant attorney general Heather Barcinas appeared for the government.
According to court documents, the victim told police that Matsunaga is a former boyfriend with whom she no longer has a relationship but shares a child with.
In the early hours of May 2, she said she saw Matsunaga outside her house and asked him what he was doing there, to which he replied nothing. After this, the victim said she went on with her day but later, Matsunaga pushed opened the door to her room and forcefully “massaged and caressed” her.
The victim said she tried to fight back but she noticed that Matsunaga was also holding a kitchen knife. She said she got scared and stopped fighting back.
The victim further told police that Matsunaga cut her shorts while she was lying on her stomach.
Sometime later, the victim said Matsunaga walked up to her, splashed her with water from a cup, and punched her in the back of her head.
