$50 vouchers to help entice Japanese tourists

The Marianas Visitors Authority has approved funds to be used for vouchers for Japanese tourists when they visit the CNMI.

As an incentive and to entice more arrivals from Japan, MVA’s Japan Ad-Hoc Committee came up with a program to give vouchers to those who will be booking their trips.

According to MVA managing director Chris Concepcion, their board of directors has approved $150,000 for the program, which will equate to 3,000 vouchers of $50 each.

The $50 vouchers will be given to the agents to give to their customers who book from June 1 to July 15, Concepcion said. He added that the Japan Saipan Travel Association will take care of the distribution.

“These vouchers can be redeemed at qualifying businesses here in the CNMI who are MVA members,” Concepcion said.

“It’s sort of to entice the Japanese market. It’s going to be marketed of course in Japan. The JSTA will be in charge of distribution,” he added.

Previously, the board had also approved funds to be used in waiving landing fees to any airline flying to Japan with direct regular daily flights as part of the government’s efforts to revive the Japanese market.

Asked if the recent magnitude 7.0 quake in Kumamoto, Japan might have an effect to Japanese tourist arrivals in the CNMI, Concepcion said he hopes it won’t.

“I don’t think so. The quakes were centered in the Kumamoto area, southwestern Japan, quite a big distance from Tokyo. And so, I hope it’s not going to effect, I think it won’t have any significant impact on tourist arrivals in Japan,” Concepcion said.

“We have not heard anything from our partners in Tokyo of any significant drop,” he added.
