More than 400 students enrolled at the Northern Marianas College are eligible to receive financial assistance from the CNMI Scholarship Office this spring 2012 semester.

In her report to the Board of Regents on Tuesday, NMC president Sharon Y. Hart said that of the 406 students eligible to avail of this assistance, only five will be awarded grants under the Honors scholarship while 401 will receive aid under education assistance program or EAP.

The two programs, administered by the NMI Scholarship Office, are open to both on- and off-island students.

Hart also reported that of the EAP scholars, 375 students will receive $600 each, while eight will receive $340 to $588 each. Honors scholars receive between $1,956 and $5,981 per semester.

Hart shared that the Department of Finance has already transferred into NMC’s account $236,376 for recipients of the NMI Scholarship Office. The disbursed amount was half of the requested disbursement of $472,753 from NMC and covers the scholars of fall 2011 semester.

The NMI Scholarship Office was approved a $2 million budget this fiscal year, of which $1.1 million will go to NMC scholars-both Honors and EAP-while the remaining balance will pay for the financial assistance of off-island scholars.

There were nearly 1,700 new and renewable applications deemed eligible by the CNMI Scholarship Office this spring 2012 semester, a figure slightly higher compared to the 1,558 applications in the spring 2011 semester.
