Four pro-Hong Kong demonstrators were arrested last Sunday after their attempt at a peaceful protest in Garapan turned violent, sending two to the Commonwealth Health Center.

According to a Department of Public Safety statement yesterday, it said that police responded to a “disturbing the peace” incident involving four pro-Hong Kong protesters and two other Chinese individuals across the Saipan Store II near I Love Saipan store in Garapan at about 6:03pm last Sunday.

The arrested protesters were Yuan Feng Kung, Ming Li, Xiao Wei Qin, and Yi Qun Jia.

The four allegedly beat two other Chinese individuals, one female and one male, who were allegedly interfering with their attempt at a peaceful protest.

One individual, which the DPS statement did not identify, reportedly sustained a broken bone beneath the left eye and a laceration, while the other individual sustained no major injuries.

According to DPS, responding police officers observed at the scene several Chinese individuals on the pathway holding wooden stakes attached to signs, protesting ongoing issues happening between Hong Kong and China. Police also observed two individuals who appeared to be injured.

Police called for medical assistance for the two individuals and they were brought to the Commonwealth Health Center for treatment and further evaluation.

Witnesses at the scene told police that the first victim had walked over to the group of protesters, and asked them to move out of the pathway.

The four men from the group allegedly assaulted the first victim by hitting the victim’s face with the bottom of the wooden stake before punching and stomping on him. The second victim went over to try and stop the assault, but was also injured by the same four individuals.

DPS reported that the first victim sustained a broken bone underneath the left eye and later received stitches for the small laceration. The second victim was also seen but was released.
