MAITE, Guam—First Hawaiian Bank and Guam Business magazine awarded $12,980 Thursday to four Guam recipients of the First Hawaiian Bank and Guam Business magazine Businesswoman of the Year scholarship.

Three students at the University of Guam and one student at the Guam Community College received scholarship awards in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements.

The four are Amery Jane A. Madeloso, University of Guam; Flori-Anne Dela Cruz, University of Guam; Venisha R. Schunter, University of Guam; and Helen B. Garcia, Guam Community College.

This was on top of the $14,670.75 in scholarship funds awarded to six Saipan recipients at the Northern Marianas College.

Since 2006, the program has awarded a total of $234,325 in scholarships to 122 deserving college students in Guam and on Saipan. Funds for these scholarships are raised through the annual Businesswoman of the Year Gala. This year’s gala was held on April 29, 2017. In addition to raising funds for these scholarships, the annual event recognizes women who make a difference in business.

The Businesswoman of the Year program provides funding for student scholarships at three higher education institutions in the Marianas: University of Guam, Guam Community College, and Northern Marianas College. The scholarships are intended to promote higher education through financial assistance for college students pursuing professional careers in business.

Scholarship recipients were selected based on their total number of credit hours for the semester, grade point average, involvement in the community and potential for success in business. All applicants were required to submit a written essay and evidence of financial need. Each of the recipients has a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applications were open to full-time and part-time students of the three educational institutions. (PR)
