4 coast to straight wins in women’s singles

Four players took the short route to victories in the women’s singles division matches in the Sun Palace Hotel Singles and Doubles Badminton Competition 2014 last Saturday at the TSL Sports Complex.
Tina Lee was one of them, as she downed Gigi Zapanta in straight games, 21-17, 21-16, in the women’s C singles on Court. Also recording wins after only two games were Nicole Malasarte, Toshiko Obata, and Windy Fernandez.
Malasarte dominated Roxe Lazaro, 21-9, 21-9, in the other women’s C singles game last weekend, while Obata notched a 21-15, 21-17 triumph over Marylyn Montano in Class B. Fernandez is also entered in Class B singles and defeated Rowena Sison, 21-10, 21-14.
In the men’s singles, three matches were decided in straight games, while the three others went the distance.
A.J. Ortega earned a free win in the opening game against Marc Mora, 21-0 (no show) before completing the sweep, 21-4, in the men’s C singles. In the other Class C singles tiff, Jeremi Montenejo topped John Cano, 21-13, 21-18, while in Class A, Jerry Hibi outclassed Jordan Pangilinan, 21-7, 21-20.
The two other Class A singles matches were played in three games with Jexler Carano and Deether Edralin winning over separate foes. Caranto bounced back from an opening game loss to Macoi Aguda, 20-21, prevailing in the last two games, 21-6, 21-12, while Edralin survived Ezekiel Macario, 21-18, 16-21, 21-13. The other three-game duel came in Class B singles with Sang Yu Young outlasting J.P. Nopia, 21-13, 15-21, 21-12.
Complementing last Saturday’s roll of singles games were six doubles matches.
In the men’s doubles A, Andreau Galvez and Caranto swept Aguda and Aries Cordero, 21-18, 21-15, while Sam Jones and Glenn Bluutjens also took only two games to prevail against Jerry Hibi and Chris Hilario, 21-16, 21-12. The other men’s doubles tiff (Class C) set for last Saturday was easily won by Montenejo and Cano after a no-show from Panapa Peteru and his partner.
In the women’s doubles, two Class B and one Class A matches were won after only two games, while the lone Class C game was extended to three. In Class A, Jen Savellano and Janelle Pangilinan trounced Lanie Bartolome and Fernandez, 21-10, 21-9, while in Class B, Loyda Ito and Shirley Kim and Cheng Saturno and So Young defeated Cristy Villaflor and Lani Santos, 21-18, 21-19, and Sison and Sally Im, 21-11, 21-18, respectively. In Class C, Lazaro and Emily Vargas rallied past Patricia Abantao and Nicole Malasarte, 12-21, 21-20, 21-17.
