3,537 registered voters so far for Precinct 3 election
Deadline to register is Sept. 17
So far, there are now 3,537 registered voters for Precinct 3 for the special election that will be held on Oct. 16 to fill a House of Representatives seat left vacant with the sudden passing of representative Ivan A. Blanco.
Commonwealth Election Commission executive director Kayla Igitol said yesterday that voter registration is still ongoing and that the last day to register is Sept. 17. Igitol said absentee voting applications are available online.
As of yesterday, no one has yet to file their candidacy and that the deadline to submit nominating petitions and candidacy documents is this coming Friday, Sept. 3.
Last Tuesday, the Democratic Party of the NMI central executive committee announced its endorsement of Corina L. Magofna as the party’s candidate for the special election.
CEC opened the submission for nominating petitions and candidacy last Aug. 19.
The seven-day early voting will start on Oct. 9, but voting sites have not been confirmed yet.
Igitol said the proposed Election Day polling sites are Oleai Elementary School for 3A and Garapan Elementary School for 3B.
She said votes will be counted manually at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe.
The executive director said ballots will be printed locally.
The CEC board is looking at holding a meeting on Sept. 10. At present, there are five CEC commissioners—two from Saipan, two from Rota, and one from Tinian. There are four vacancies—three from Saipan and one from Tinian.
Blanco’s untimely passing last July 23 triggered the special election.
In March 2019, the CEC held a special election also for Precinct 3, following the death of representative Francisco Dela Cruz in January 2019.
