More than 3,000 athletes and officials from 24 countries are expected to take part in the 2017 Pacific Mini Games that will be held in Port Vila, Vanuatu.

Athletes across the Pacific and from Australia and New Zealand will compete in 14 sports, including the new addition to the calendar of events—the 3×3 basketball (men and women). Of these 14 events, athletics drew the most participating nations with 19, while weightlifting is ranked second with 12. Lawn tennis, beach volleyball, and rugby 7s have lured 13 countries each, boxing has 12, golf and table tennis have 11 each, soccer and judo has 10 apiece, archery has nine, and karate and netball has six each. 3×3 basketball, which was added on the list just this month, has attracted 10 countries, including the CNMI.

The Commonwealth will also field athletes in athletics, golf, and rugby 7s.

The 10th edition of the Mini Games will be held from Dec. 4 to 15 and the host country is busy preparing the venues for each events.

Last week, local organizers had a site visit at the Korman Complex, which is undergoing renovations and installation of new facilities. The Korman stadium will host the opening ceremony, while its track oval will be the venue for athletics and football and rugby 7s games. Also being built near the complex are indoor halls for karate, judo, and boxing; and courts for lawn tennis, netball, table tennis, and beach volleyball.
