Three stalwarts of the CNMI business community are on the shortlist for the Saipan Chamber of Commerce 2019 Business Person of the Year award that will be announced during the BPOY Gala on Jan. 25, 2020.

Chamber executive director Maxine Laszlo said the three finalists for the prestigious award are Gloria Cavanagh of Pacific Islands Club Saipan, Glen Hunter of The Shack, and Bo Palacios of J.C. Tenorio Enterprises.

“Gloria Cavanagh, Glen Hunter, and Bo Palacios were all nominated by their Chamber peers as business leaders who went above and beyond in 2019,” said Chamber president Velma Palacios in an email to Saipan Tribune.

She said considerations for BPOY include the nominee’s community involvement and contributions, support for the local workforce, and active participation in the Chamber.

“We’re honored these three individuals are a part of our Chamber of Commerce and continually support our community,” added Palacios.

Cavanagh is the general manager of Pacific Island Club Saipan. She is also the chairwoman of the Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands, a board member of the Northern Marianas Business Alliance, and vice chairperson of the Marianas Visitors Authority.

Hunter is the owner of three Chamber member companies: The Shack, the Airstream, Go Hydro. He has been a member of the Chamber for the last 13 years (Pacific Trading Co., then Transpacific, then The Shack). Most recently, he’s been actively engaged with the membership committee, helping with new membership orientations, mentoring new entrepreneurs at Pitchfest, and co-conducting trainings for the Saipan Young Professionals.

Palacios is the vice president of J.C. Tenorio Enterprises, which owns the slew of Joeten supermarkets in the CNMI. He is also the president of the Commonwealth Cancer Association.

Officially established in 1976, the Chamber now has 142 members ranging from sole-proprietorships, large resort hotels, service companies, tour agencies, and insurance firms, to construction companies.
