The CNMI will have three swimmers competing in the 13th FINA World Swimming Championships that will be held in Canada in December this year.

Northern Mariana Islands Swimming Federation has selected Saipan Swim Club’s Christian Villacrusis and Salofi Welch and Tsunami Saipan’s Angel De Jesus to represent the Commonwealth in the short-course (25M) meet that will take place at the Windsor Family Credit Union Centre in Windsor, Ontario from Dec. 6 to 11. David Boyer, also of SSC, was named alternate on the young swim team.

Joining the three CNMI swimmers in Canada is head coach Jacoby Winkfield, who will also attend the FINA Swimming Coaches Golden Clinic on Dec. 4 and 5. Completing the CNMI delegation to the FINA events are NMIFA president John Hirsh and board member Emma Perez. Hirsh will represent the Commonwealth in the FINA World Aquatics Convention at the Caesar Windsor Resort and Convention Center from Dec. 3 to 5, while Perez will join the FINA World Sports Medicine Congress on Dec. 3 and 4.

Winkfield, in an email to Saipan Tribune, said the NMISF board will meet next week to discuss other details of their participation to the four events in Canada. He has also yet to decide on the races that Villacrusis, Welch, and De Jesus will be competing in.

Meanwhile, the clinic that Winkfield will be participating in will have U.S. men’s Olympic coach Bob Bowman, U.S. Olympic women’s David Marsh, British swimming head coach Bill Furniss, Canada swimming head coach Ben Titley, and Olympic medalist and elite coach Fred Vergnoux as resource speakers.

Meanwhile, the second local swim meet will be held on Nov. 12 when SSC hosts the 2016 All Schools Swimming Championships.
