3-peats galore in high school caging

(Joe Auther) Completing a string of three championships has become a norm in the Coalition of Private Schools Sports Association Basketball League.

Just last April 27, both the Grace Christian Academy Eagles and the Saipan International School Lady Geckos made history by winning their third consecutive titles in the COPSSA caging.

The Eagles made the mother of all comebacks, rallying from as much as an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter to shock Mt. Carmel School, 69-68, in the one-game boys varsity championship at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium of the TSL Sports Complex.

In the first game of the finals, doubleheader, SIS extended its reign in the girls varsity division with a thrilling 31-30 win over Grace Christian Academy .

The CNMI U14 National Football Team, meanwhile, last week returned to a hero’s welcome from their very successful stint in the 2012 Boys Asian Football Confederation U14 Festival in Beijing, China

Despite having the youngest football federation and smallest in terms of population in the AFC, the Commonwealth finished with a 2-5-2 win-loss-draw record.

The CNMI beat Chinese-Taipei, 2-0, and Macau, 1-0. It also forced draws against host China, 1-1, and Mongolia, 2-2.

It did lose five games, twice to Guam (2-0 and 4-0), once against South Korea (2-0), and were thoroughly beaten by AFC powerhouses Japan (18-0) and North Korea (9-0).

Last April 28 and 29 also saw the start of the 2012 CNMI Junior Tennis Championships with 28 singles and doubles matches going down at both the American Memorial Park and Pacific Islands Club tennis courts.

Games in the Saipan Little League, Saipan Major League, Chamolinian Softball Assocation, and Marianas Interscholastic Sports Association soccer also continued last week.
