Badminton player Janelle Pangelinan and runners Anika Snyder and Ken Song took the Northern Marianas Sports Association’s October top honors for their notable performances in off-island tournaments last month.

Pangilinan

Pangelinan, along with her partner Nicole Malasarte, won the women’s open doubles event in the Badminton Invitational Guam 2019 held at the John F. Kennedy High School from Oct. 11 to 13. The duo won over Philippines’ Jocelyn Rentillo and Lyzel Querol in the best-of-three finals, 2-1.

The 21-year-old Pangilinan also played in the mixed doubles division, pairing up with her brother, Jordan, and they made it to the finale, too. The siblings eventually settled for the runner-up honors after losing to Guam’s Jinsha Yao and C.J. Estipona.

Meanwhile, Snyder and Song of Saipan International School were named NMSA/Tan Siu Lin Foundation Student Athlete of the Month for leading Team Marianas in the 2019 Asia Pacific Invitational Cross-Country Championships held in Japan.

Song

Song was the top finisher among the Commonwealth’s male runners as he completed the 5-kilometer race in 18:23.2. He made it to the prestigious All-Island, as he was ranked No. 12 overall in the boys division that had nearly 100 runners from Japan, Guam, and the CNMI.

Synder

Snyder, on the other hand, was the Commonwealth’s fastest female finisher in the same race after recording 23:05 mark.

Snyder and Song also led Team Marianas to third place overall in the combined individual and relays results, joining St. Mary’s/Seisen, and Christian Academy in Japan in the podium.

Snyder and Song before heading to Japan for the Asia Pacific event, dominated the series of races in the Public School System/Northern Marianas Athletics’ All Schools Cross Country Championship.
