The CNMI will have three entries in the 2017 Oceania Closed Junior Championships, which will be held at the Regional Training Center in Lautoka, Fiji this month.
In the girls singles, the Commonwealth will be represented by Carol Lee and Isabel Heras, who are included on the acceptance list of the tournament that will run from Aug. 7 to 11. In the boys field, the CNMI will have Robbie Schorr. The three CNMI bets will challenge players from Australia, New Zealand, Vanuatu, American Samoa, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Tahiti, Papua New Guinea, Guam, and host Fiji.
Lee will be the fourth-highest seeded player in the girls field at No. 239 behind No. 72 Violet Apisah of PNG, No. 163 Lisa Mays of Australia, and No. 210 Olivia Gadecki, also of from the Land Down Under. Heras is ranked No. 1,347 and she and Lee could move up to the ladder as more ITF Juniors ranking points are at stake in the B2 tournament. The Oceania Closed offers 120 ranking points to the singles champion and 80, 60, 40, 25, and 10 to the runner-up, semifinalists, quarterfinalists, losers in Last 16, and losers in Last 32. The doubles champions and runners-up will get 80 and 60 points, respectively, and 40, 25, and 10 to the semifinalists, quarterfinalists, and losers in Last 16.
Schorr has 2.5 combined ranking points (10 in doubles and none in singles) and is ranked No. 2,178 as of July 24, 2017. Lee has earned 183.75 (155 in singles and 115 in doubles) after a series of strong showings in tournaments in Morroco, Fiji, and New Caledonia this year, while Heras has 22.5 ( 15 singles and 30 in doubles).
Lee and company’s opening assignments in the singles event of the Oceania Closed won’t be determined until this weekend, as players have until Sunday to sign in for the competition.
