FROM 2017 TO 2018
23-pct. increase in cancer association clients
The Commonwealth Cancer Association has seen a 23-percent increase in the number of its clients in a span of just a year.
During the Marianas March Against Cancer Week proclamation signing yesterday at the Joeten Motors Kia showroom, CCA reported that they saw a 23-percent increase in the number of clients between 2017 and 2018.
In the CNMI, the top five diagnosed cancers based on the CNMI Cancer Registry are gynecological cancers, breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancers, head and neck cancers, and urological cancers.
“The risk of developing most types of cancer can be reduced by changes in a person’s lifestyle. Global cancer research indicates that nearly 50 percent of common cancers are preventable,” the proclamation states.
“According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, keeping weight at a healthy level, eating a healthy diet, and being physically active can greatly reduce cancer risk,” it added.
The annual MMAC celebrates cancer survivors, supports caregivers, remembers lost loved ones, and empowers the CNMI community to fight back against cancer.
According to MMAC committee member Bobby Cruz, proceeds collected from the MMAC would support the CCA’s mission to “advocate for a cancer-free CNMI” through early detection, public education, awareness about cancer prevention, cancer screenings, and to “provide hope and support for cancer patients, survivors, and their families through community partnerships and programs.”
The 17th MMAC is set to start to happen on May 3, 2019, from 5:30pm to 5:30am on May 4, 2019.
“Thousands of people from all walks of life from across the CNMI will gather to celebrate the perpetual theme of, ‘One community! One journey!” said MMAC committee member Carline Sablan. “The theme celebrates the indomitable courage of our people as we choose to stand together in support of those who are fighting cancer.”
