2012 Rota Cliff Fishing Derby on July 27-29
Cliff fishing competition returns to Rota next month with the 2012 Rota Cliff Fishing Derby set for July 27-29, 2012.
Co-sponsored by the Marianas Visitors Authority and the municipality of Rota, the event aims to attract visitors to the tropical island for competition at three well-known fishing sites: As Matmos, Malilok, and Pona Point.
Registration is $30. Fishermen ages 16 and younger are free. The last day to register is July 26, at 4pm.
Derby check-in will be at 4pm on July 27 at Guata Beach Park, followed by orientation and the start of the derby at 5:30pm. The derby will end at 12 noon on the final day.
Cash prizes will be awarded for the Top 4 finishers in the categories of Biggest Fish and Total Weight ($600 first place, $300 second place, $200 third place, and $100 fourth place).
The Top 4 finishers in the Most Variety category will be receiving in-kind donations from Ambros Inc.
“For many years these cliff sites have been known as some the best fishing spots for not only fishing competitions, but also for those fishing for personal consumption. The three locations offer derby participants options at different parts of the island, especially during windy conditions,” said MVA Community Projects manager Martin Duenas. “Between the cliff fishing and Rota’s natural beauty, the Rota Cliff Fishing Derby offers visiting fishermen a memorable excursion.”
In addition to the MVA, the event is sponsored by the Rota Mayor’s Office, Rota Municipal Council, Rota Legislative Delegation, and Ambros Inc.
Weigh-ins will be at each fishing site in the morning and evening of July 28 and on the morning of July 29. Reserving spots before the derby begins will not be allowed.
